The responsive middle child

Mirra 2 sits between Herman Miller's entry Sayl and its flagships, and its personality is responsiveness: a back that flexes with you, a seat that breathes, and a tilt that reclines without ceremony. It's the Herman Miller for people who want the engineering and the warranty without paying flagship money.

The back: TriFlex or Butterfly

The standard TriFlex back is a single flexible polymer moulded with a dotted pattern whose openings vary in size, so different zones give by different amounts — firmer where you need support, softer where you need movement. The Butterfly option layers a thin fabric-and-polymer suspension over that frame for a slightly softer, quieter feel. Both breathe far better than an upholstered back.

How it supports the body

PostureFit cradles the sacrum at the base of the spine, the Loop spine allows a little torsional flex so the back can follow you when you twist, and the Harmonic 2 tilt keeps recline smooth and even. The AireWeave seat is an elastomeric suspension — cool and lively rather than plush. Herman Miller rates the chair to 350 lb, higher than many of its rivals, under a full 12-year warranty.

Configuring it, and the colours

The base build has a fixed seat depth and fixed arms; the upgrades that matter are FlexFront (adjustable seat depth, useful for taller sitters), the tilt limiter with adjustable seat-angle, and fully adjustable arms. Mirra 2 also comes in Herman Miller's brighter palette — Alpine, Ultramarine, Olive, Cordovan, Ochre and Graphite — so it can be a quieter or a bolder object in a room.
