Steelcase engineering, brought down in price

Series 1 was Steelcase's move to put its contract-grade ideas into a chair most people can actually afford — and, unusually for a premium brand, one you can buy on Amazon and return normally. It borrows the recline logic and the LiveBack thinking from chairs several times its price.

How it supports the body

The recline is weight-activated: instead of winding a tension knob, the chair reads your body weight and sets its own resistance, with a "boost" control that firms it up by about a fifth and an upright stop if you want to sit forward. An adjustable lumbar is standard on most builds, and the back flexes to keep contact as you move. It's rated to 400 lb — genuinely high for the price.

Choosing the back and arms

The back comes two ways: the 3D Microknit, a softer knit that gives with you and offers the widest colour range, or the Air back, a more structured, airier mesh. Arms run from a full 4D (height, width, depth, pivot) down to a simple height-adjustable arm or armless — and the cheapest listings are usually armless, so it pays to confirm. Match the casters to your floor and Series 1 becomes a lot of real Steelcase for the money; the honest limits are no headrest and materials a rung below Gesture or Leap.
